Help with a Genesis cycle deck

I am playing with some irl friends in old metas. Genesis especially. And I find building and playing Jinteki decks especially difficult.
Anyone interested in creating a Jinteki deck tailored against these runners with the limited cardpool of Genesis+Core?

Jinteki was at its weakest in Genesis Only. It wasn’t quite unplayable, but it lacked Taxing ICE, Gearcheck ICE, Economy, and good upgrades.

Chimera + Akitaro was one of the strongest things RP could do to keep people out of a server until they had all 3 breakers. (Or just Crypsis, which is why Crypsis was a good breaker back then.) Note: This is still not good, just strong in that meta. For RP, also remember that you can import Ash, one of the best upgrades ever, if you’re trying to go for a taxing-heavy strategy.

For RP and PE, Pop-Up Window is a popular ICE to use as it’s cheap to import and a very effective way of gaining money. It’s not good at keeping runners out of servers, though.

PE had a problem where it was frequently unable to do enough net damage to flatline Runners, because most Runners will play around Genesis-era PE and you couldn’t run them out of cards in Stack. You absolutely want the maximum number of Hokusai Grid and Neural EMP possible. PE has a unique strength against Noise because Noise can accidentally die to an Archives run if there’s too many agendas in it.

To my knowledge, PE decks of that era did not play Braintrust, but did play False Lead. You’d see 3x Nisei, 3x Fetal, 2x False Lead, 3x Private Security Force. A scored False Lead makes it so Runners have to run click 1 or 3 against Jinteki or risk dying to a Snare and being unable to draw up or clear the tag. The PSF was there in the case where the Runner held a tag for whatever reason. I can see an alternate where you played 3x Braintrust instead of PSF. Corporate War is bad because it’s only good econ if you already have good econ, but you need econ when you have bad money, so Corporate War doesn’t fit the bill for pre-Spin Jinteki (no Celebrity Gift).

Trick of Light was also featured in PE decks of the era, because they gave you something to do with failed Junebugs.

Also, holy crap, Ronin’s available. You should definitely play that in PE.

I took a shot at RP and ultimately your idea wasn’t far off from mine. For as strong as Scorched Earth was in the beginning, I was tempted to go the route with Data Raven/Hunter as the “punishing” Ice on centrals, in addition to the native Snares to apply threatening tags. I didn’t, but feel free to explore that option yourself.

RP generally prefers lower agenda density than PE, so with that in mind, I went down to 9 from your 10. It’s nice to have 3/2s easy to score, but also self-protecting agendas, so equal numbers of Fetal AI and Braintrust.

Assets and upgrades are nearly identical. Akitaro can rez Chimera for free, multiple times, giving you good impact from his ability, and Midori can get relevant ice out later in the game if you didn’t draw it early. Akitaro should almost always be scoring server.

Operations are about the same, but with Precognition and GLC, you can draw the card you need/want with a deeper search than Anonymous Tip (if you want that searching more often, probably drop Midori for another Precog). If you prefer draw to money, trade GLC for AT.

Ice. Barriers is as barriers does. Code gates though…Chum is for positional taxing placement on centrals and Sensei for positional placement on your scoring server. Since we aren’t going for the kill, necessarily, I traded a NK for Ichi. I find program destruction in RP to be a boon. Chimera, therefore, is super useful, especially when you can continually rez for free.

If you do choose to experiment with a Scorch deck, definitely drop that Midori for a Precog, and maybe check out Draco for asset protection.

In general: PE isn’t as interested in keeping people out as it is in making people pay dearly for each access.
RP is interested in keeping people out, or else paying through the nose to get in. RP is also slightly better with money as a result. (Melange Mining Corp can be played in RP, btw.)

Tollbooth doesn’t belong in PE, is what I’m going for here.

Have you looked up the Genesis-era decks? There are several on Stimhack Winning page: Tournament Winning Decklists - StimHack

A few of these were won during the first Regional season, which was more like Store Championships. But, GenCon 2013 was also won by a PE deck after C&C was released (so, it’s easy enough to alter):

http://stimhack.com/august-2013-gencon-tournament

IIRC, the winner’s runner Katman deck mostly carried him to victory, but it’s still a notable performance for early Jinteki.

The Neutral Agenda helped tremendously with the Jinteki deck.
It’s very difficult to build that style of deck without at least 4 1-pointers. Cerebral Overwriter helped out, too. (Easier Ronin/Snare kills)

Basically you have to pull Overwriter, Gila, and Bastion. Replace with 2x GLC, 1x Ichi 1.0, 1x Braintrust, Junebug, and that’s probably as close as you can get.

Thank you for the replies! :grinning:

“Chimera + Akitaro” is a neat idea, I haven`t thought of it.
Pop-Up Window: I experimented with it and abandoned it, I need to experiment a little bit more.
PE: Hokusai+Neural, I think you are right. Maybe even import some scorched earths?
I was thinking about how I could flatline a Noise when they are running archives, even if there is a data mine and a hokusai protecting the server, they need to run into to two Fetal AI and they still can negate the net damage or protect themselves by overdrawing.
False lead: I feel like an idiot of not thinking about including False lead into PE. :open_mouth:

Ronin: I might be playing them wrong.

Data raven+Hunter: I will definitely try.

Precog: I have never even tried to use this card past my first couple of learning games, I will try it again, if it as good as Anonymous Tip (but without the influence) I will feel like an idiot after it.

Ichi: I try to include an Ichi into all of my Corp decks, just for discouraging early pokes.

Yeah with celebral overwriter in the mix, it isn’t worth for the runner to run remotes. Just pressure centrals.

Fetal AI doesn’t do net damage in archives (it excludes it in the card text).

Ronin is best used as a threat to kill the runner along with advanceable traps like Junebug. Advance a junebug 4 times to threaten ronin and they might run it. If you advance a ronin 4 times, you can do 3 net for a click on a future turn. This works well with Neural EMP, Snare!, and other net damage cards.
