A (Mostly) Low Quality Discussion on Card Balance

I want to use this card so badly.

I’m not being ignorant. These factors should not be considered when trying to determine the ideal one should be working towards. Many others seem to set a low bar for FFG, and defend them vehemently when they meet it. I think FFG should set their own bar higher and strive to meet it. I don’t have any idea of how rigorously FFG playtests ANR; I can only infer from the evidence, which is the cards they release.

I don’t think keeping a constantly-evolving game mostly fresh and unbroken for years at a time is a low bar. I played a decent number of 90s CCGs and I think you’re taking a lot for granted here. You never know when binder fodder might become usable anyway. Salvage and Gingerbread are outliers even among the chaff cards. Plus, some of them are good for flavor and theme, even if they aren’t great in competetive decks.

Man, now I really want to run a theme deck tournament sometime.

And what ideal is that? That every card should be good in competitive play?

That every card should be reasonably costed and powered. As I’ve said before, niche cards are important, but they need to be aggressively costed and powered since they compete with ubiquitous cards for slots.

This isn’t a reasonable expectation. Again, it isn’t trivial that UNDERpowered cards do NO HARM to the game while OVERpowered cards potentially completely break it. There isn’t enough time, money, or enough people involved to actually test every possibility with a card, to find its perfect cost/effect/influence and how it interacts with every other card in the pool. Not to mention not all cards are meant to be competitive, a lot of people that purchase Netrunner aren’t going to tournaments regularly, and even some people that do just want to build fun decks. Has it been a flawless execution? No, but it has been damn good, and to insinuate otherwise is just ridiculous.

I don’t believe I ever insinuated otherwise. Other people just don’t seem to be able to keep a calm head when critiquing things they like.

Like Dan said, I think there have already been plenty of cards that anyone who plays Netrunner could simply look at and balance a bit better with no testing required. Those are the particularly frustrating cases, IMO.

I personally hate seeing great concepts marred by poor balancing.

Only three things stand out to me as cards that slipped through playtesting and came out with a negative impact on the game. That is a pretty damn good track record for a game with this many cards and sets out. (this comment is ignoring the core set, for a variety of reasons).

Those three are:

Fast Track shouldn’t have been as accessible to NBN.
The Psi game should NEVER have found it’s way onto cards that would see play in legitimate tournament decks (a 5/3 especially)
And ITD should never have seen print, not because it is overpowered or even good, but because it can turn an entire tournament into a negative experience for everybody.

Everything else has been fairly minor.

I think we are somewhat approaching the issue(s) from different angles. You seem to be only concerned with protecting the integrity of the competitive game by preventing overpowered cards. That is definitely something important to me, too. My main argument is that in an ideal world, we would see a larger pool of viable cards, through better design/playtesting. I hope and believe that FFG and Lukas are interested in this, too, and will continue to move towards it. From both your perspective and mine, I think Lunar Cycle was the best cycle so far. Let’s hope this trend continues.

From your angle, the problematic cards are Fast Track, TFP, and ITD. Many agree with you, including myself. For me, some ‘problem’ cards are Autoscripter, Bad Times, and Collective Consciousness, to name the first three from alphabetical Lunar Cycle that stick out to me personally. IMO these are all very strong concepts and cards that bring new options to the table, that are not viable due to design decisions.

I think another aspect of erring on the side of caution is the multiplicative power of cards. Let’s say FFG releases a datapack of really good cards (think roughly equal to the 20 best cards already printed). None of them are overpowered in and of themselves, but they each have the potential to be part of a really OP combo or synergy. I think we saw this starting the NEH Fastro. None of the cards were OP, the community couldn’t agree on which part was the problem, probably because there was no specific problem, just a lot of acceptably powerful cards synergizing together really well.

It’s R&D’s responsibility to test so overpowered combos/synergies don’t arise. I realize that FFG isn’t the biggest company. We already have arguably the best card game on the market, but imagine how it could be even better.

I’ve said it before (as has @crossbrainedfool), but this is the thing with BlacKat. It was probably either 3 credits to install, 4 strength, 2 influence, or some combination thereof, originally. And it would’ve broken things hardcore.

1 credit to break Eli? Yeah, that’d have been relevant, especially since it still managed to break Curtain Wall for cheaper than Corroder does now, at 4 strength it would’ve been even more efficient there. 7 credits (4 stealth) for Curtain Wall is actually a pretty good deal, especially with how many of them are recurring stealth credits. Eli, Bastion, Hive, Ashigaru, NEXT Silver, almost all of the major barriers just vanish up in it. And the utility with normal credits mean that it doesn’t even have the weakness Switchblade does of really getting taxed out. It’d have made most big barriers a joke, so they added some stuff, it was still worryingly good, they added more, and overall that made it mediocre at best because the second thing was the real problem.
Like, I agree, but at the same time… I dunno. I’d love it if they had the resources to make the balancing better and cover testing things until more of the cards we’d want to play would be good enough to do so. But a lot of the time they get downright insulted for not having tested to the point of uplifting the weaker cards when they initially had no plans to rotate and a big worry about future brokenness due to their limited testing ability but some awareness of the problems that ONR had.

I’d love it if they could make Kraken worth playing or get other things better, but I want to at least wait until we’ve got SanSan and ANR 29 before judging too hard. They’re planning on actually taking risks here, and I think a significant number of the cards so far have potential when combined with other parts of the cycle.

Bad Times is a great example of a theory/practice card. I’m honestly not sure how you change it to make it playable but not obnoxious.

Collective Consciousness is cool, but that 2 MU is no accident. Handing card draw out like candy is something FFG is (rightly) loath to do. Again, I’m not sure how you change it without making something break.

Autoscriper is a great example of how one card limits others. If Noise doesn’t exist, Autoscriper can be way better - which is why Haley is printable.

Give me either of the last two. GOODAMN IT"S SO CLOSE.

BlacKat is the poster child for how a small thing can make a big difference. One number is different on that card and it goes from “pain in the neck to use” to “wait, someone made a mistake”

No one here is arguing that bad cards are a good thing.

But FFG’s design team for Netrunner for a vast majority of the game’s life thus far has been one guy. Playtesting is done off the clock. FFG as a company assigns it no more importance or resources than Call of fucking Cthulu. The game that’s been dead for years. Given the resources available to him, Lukas has worked miracles.

And FWIW, I think most of the ‘unfair’ corp stuff has been more than compensated for. Essentially every mistake made in the core set has been rectified. My only major gripe with the game right now is that Agenda suites will never significantly change until we see new 3/2s printed, which will be 2017 at the absolute earliest?

Honestly? I think people should be prohibited from even having an opinion on game balance and design until they’ve done at least a miniscule amount of design work.

Take something as small and self-contained as designing a class for DnD 3.5. To do it in a meaningful manner, your work will not only have to make sense and be consistent, it will also have to fit into the grander context (i.e. your class isn’t over- or underpowered, it’s meaningful to take it without it taking away too much from other, already existing classes). Then consider how many other connections and causalities you’d have to consider if you wanted to design, say, a set of feats to go with your class.

Now multiply that shit by a factor of about 10,00 and you’re starting to approach the complexities of designing for an LCG.

I’ve done system design work on multiple published RPG products - if you’re interested, I can share stories. But be forewarned: they’ll make you realize what a huge ass you’re making of yourself in this very thread to anyone who’s ever done any work in the field.

(emphasis mine)

Seriously, man - hindsight, 20/20.

Here’s an example of how easy it is to mis-evaluate a card in a vacuum and without actual play experience:
Bad Publicity - 1 out of 5
After doing the math with Kati (to draw her, get her in play, then bank up enough on her to get your investment back) , this card sucks. Get in your jet Kati. Fly away…zoom zoom
This is a literal quote from the set review of Humanity’s Shadow when it was coming out. Now, think of the BP crowd what you will, the fact remains that back then they were among the few people publishing about this game, and were often enough spot-on to be reasonably considered opinion makers.

I’m sure you can come up with more recent examples of impactful cards being mis-evaluated by strong and proficient players.

Call of Cthulhu is essentially this, with new product being exclusively deluxe boxes coming out every 4 months. The game ends up being both much spikier and tougher for playgroups to keep a stable level of interest in because of this.

Personally, I much prefer Netrunner’s model, until the game is significantly more matured at least.

It’s never had a huge following, but those that do, do so vigorously. And yes, the game is extremely good (and even though I’m expecting them to shut it down after about 5 more big boxes or so, I definitely hope they don’t).

If you don’t consider Ronin, Wotan or Melange to be good cards, I really don’t want to know what qualifies as overpowered in your mind!

Those arent good cards. Ronin and Wotan see almost no play. Melange saw some play at the start of Netrunner but almost no play now.

So no those are not good cards. In fact, Wotan is really easy to get through, you dont even need a breaker.

We are approaching from different angles. I am approaching from a perspective grounded in reality, you are approaching from a “what-if” perspective. We all agree that given infinite money and resources, the game could be better, and more balanced. You mention “R&D” in your next post. What “R&D”? It’s just one guy sitting at a desk, that occasionally yells across the room to another guy sitting at a desk to ask him his opinion. Not only that, but if you aren’t aware (and this may shock a lot of people) designing ANR isn’t even Lukas full time job! He spends plenty of time on it, I am sure, but he is involved with plenty of other things as well (that XCOM board game didn’t make itself).

I encourage you to try your hand at designing a set for Netrunner, full of interesting playable cards. Submit it to Lukas, maybe some of the cards find their way into the next cycle.
