I think asking players to personally record and submit every time they play a match is a little too much to ask. Maybe more than anyone else, ranking players by skill accurately is very important to me when considering a ranking system, but if it’s too much work for too many people, it will be difficult to achieve our goal of becoming the predominant global ranking system.
I don’t know if you tried rankade.
In my experience, it’s an easy and fast sketchbook - expecially app. I think my recording time for a match is now less than 10 seconds (not “too much work”, maybe
). And approvation from the other player - not needed if an admin records the match - takes 2 seconds.
Using insertion mask, game and place are the same than last match ones, other data are optional, I just need to pick two players from list and insert points. After group building phase (that requires full email insertion, approvations, etc), it’s very, very fast.
And, let me tell it again, it’s a fast sketchbook that produces a very significant ranking.
Maybe it’s not The Best Solution here, but I can just suggest you to give it a try, maybe in a local club or regional area.
Yeah, I’ve started using it at my store and its really not so bad. I think if we had a global group, it might be a bit of a problem. It also has a problem with consent (ie, if your opponent doesn’t want to sign up for an account, then your match isn’t going to count)
Pushing the burden to tournament organizers might make more sense, but then you’re missing out on the potential of capturing all of these casual matches that occur outside the context of tournaments.
You’re right.
Regarding consent, in my experience there’s no problem after you reached a ‘critical mass’ of players (and I think this should be true even for bigger groups than mine). Ranking using rankade is a good game, as well as a very good ranking, as it should be. Every new player playing with us wants to join the group and record his games and be part of ranking, look at himself climbing (or trying to climb…) higher positions and so on.
I partecipate rankade groups even for other things (mostly basketball and pub games) and dynamic was nearly the same. If at the beginning there’s a good basis of strongly motivated players, all the others will join despite ‘exausting’ (
after registration it’s nothing but a click, as I told before) consent policy.
