Let's talk Whizzard

After playing around with a Whizzard deck I wanted to see what other people are thinking in Anarch right now.

I’ve reread the Anarch Credit Denial archetype thread and think Whizzard could use his own thread outside of this, but I’m open to reviving that thread. What interests me about Whizzard is that it seems like he can be the toughest matchup for some of the popular/emerging archetypes (RP, asset econ NEH).

To get things started, here is where my decklist is at now:

  • The card I feel the least invested in is Cyber Cypher, which I originally put in looking for a Lotus Field counter. I’m leaning back towards Knight though, but honestly haven’t seen a single Lotus Field yet in OCTGN play.
  • The 3x Djinn is for MU assistance once/if Morning Star comes out.
  • There are multiple cards in here which I wish could be 2x but have only found space for 1x of.

I think cy-cy has too much of an influence cost for what you want it to do. Femme (which you’re already running) already counters Lotus Field at a lower influence cost, and is also more versatile in general.

I’d go with Knight instead of Cyber Cypher.

I could be way off, but my first thought looking at that list is that there’s too many one-ofs, and it seems like it’d be kinda slow. I’ve been having fun with this lately:

==============

It’s still a bit messy (see: the one-off Armitage and Quality Time), but it performs pretty good. You have to play it smart with Donut and only play him against Weyland or FA (generally speaking). Retrieval Run to Femme is boss, but I’m also thinking Retrieval to Morning Star would be fun, too!

Here’s mine. The Easy Marks look weird, but I feel like desperado is enough better than Siphon when people play around Siphon anyway. Basically, the deck is designed based on the idea that Anarchs lose because they have to click for credits.

No answer for Lotus Field? Mill them before they can kill all your DLR’s?

Ah! This list was pre-H&P. No idea how you’re going to deal with Lotus Field. Knight is the most reasonable solution, but it makes a lot more sense in a deck with Siphons.

I’ve been having fun with this Whizzard deck lately. Always mulligan looking for Account Siphon or Indexing. Indexing has won so many games. The one ofs make the deck less consistent but minimize dead draws in the mid game. Once lotus field is actually released I’ll probably add a third Knight.

Lots of different directions here. I’m not sure what’s I’m adding by throwing another decklist down, but here we go. This is my current non-tag me Anarch deck. It’s hard for the corp to play against, because it keeps the pressure on all angles and doesn’t give up easy scoring windows - except when you don’t see any early breakers. The winning plays are often quite obscure, and I end quite a few games knowing I’d have won if I’d have spotted some slightly odd play.

First things first, I’m quite taken with the event economy plus Kati Jones. It’s the first Anarch deck I’ve played where I feel like I a) have enough money and b) am not relying on Siphon to do it. It doesn’t need pre-paid, cyber-feeder or Armitage would be legitimate options as well. But the advantage of pre-paid in my experience is the pressure you put on the corp by being able to gain a lot money or recur cards from being broke at the start of a turn.

Secondly, Retrival Run. The click efficency the first time you play this can be amazing. Whether it’s saving money for a Femme or a Morning Star or (more commonly in my experience) making a parasite/datasucker or Femme play that the corp didn’t see coming. But, it is a trick card and it loses most of its utility once Archives is ice’d up.

Third, Legwork. You need fast HQ multi-access against NBN and my experience is that Nerve Agent plus the runs to pump it up just slow you down too much. Plus in the late game against Glacier you won’t have the MU to have Nerve Agent and Medium at the same time and trashing one for the other puts a big hole in your tempo.

Fourth, one Carapace. It’s a playtesting thing. I would probably run two in tournements, once I work out what can be dropped.

Finally the breakers. It’s a mix for all eventualities which comes at the cost of some consistently. Ideally I’d run a second mimic, but space is at a premium. You have the money to hard play Femme and Morning Star - both of which give taxing decks fits - but you can also RR them out for cheap. Ichi 2.0, Grim and Archer at the biggest problems I face - which is one of the main reasons for keeping Femme. Knight is for Lotus Field and oddities like Susanno and Heimdell 2.0 which your breakers will struggle to reach even with Carver and Sucker.

I should say that almost every game I’ve been able to get Donut down early with Whizzard - well, I just win. Donut slows down so many archetypes so much!

I like how many Whizzard styles there are. I do like the idea of Donut, pretty much only in Whizzard–but since I like tag-me, I can’t play Donut, because all my money comes from events. Here’s my list. I more or less made it to counter Replicating Perfection. The justification for Queen’s Gambit is that in RP, anything dropped in a remote that isn’t advanced is almost always Ash or Caprice.

I’m too scared to take this to Regionals though–seems not as good versus NBN, apart from trashing San Sans.

Went 2-2 in the swiss and 0-1 in the t4 elimination bracket, losing to NEH, RP in the swiss and RP in elim (flatline on a Fetal mediumdigging behind a Komainu).
Not sure if Special Order is the way to go but it kinda sucks to see RP install a Sundew behind a Himitsu-Bako early and not have your Corroder.

Might try dropping the Special Order and Lucky Find for Syphon and also fit in the Masanori/Joshua/Data Leak combo but whenever I’ve tried that earlier I’ve found myself lacking economy in the deck.

I’m not really convinced that DLR is the way to go while NBN is at the top of the food chain. Packing two Closed Accounts has relatively little opportunity cost for them (you’re playing Breaking News, SanSan and Astro already anyway) and opens up a lot of back-breaking plays if they do have it.

In that environment, playing a self-tag strat seems borderline suicidal to me.

Here’s my current version, I love the way I spent the influence, but I still feel that some aggressivity is missing to beat NEH (2 legwork would be really great… perhaps 2 nerve agent instead of imp but it was already imp instead of plascrete…).

I’ve been trying that basic list (-1 Plascrete +1 Corroder). It has worked pretty well, except not seeing Djinn or multi-access early is a huge bummer. Also PPVP is dead if not early but amazing if you do see it, even without the Kate discount, since every single event benefits. Demo Run has been great though, the times I’ve splashed it.

I’ve been playtesting a Whizzard deck lately, simply because so many people in my area run assets and nothing feels worse than to run a server and see an asset you can’t afford to trash. It has a decent amount of recursion, and multiple methods for recurring credits - I find the hardware of PPVP and Cyberfeeder to be more useful than Daily Casts because I don’t have to be afraid to float any tags. I use Keyhole to deal with annoying Jinteki PE decks and such where I don’t actually want to multi-access cards. Spinal Modem is an odd choice, but it’s rare that I actually take the brain damage - it doesn’t usually get installed until mid to late game, at which point I know where the trace ICE is, or if I’m facing Making News probably just doesn’t get installed - and worst case, the deck can survive a brain damage or two. The biggest problem is mostly speed - can I get my breakers out in time to beat an NBN rush?

In general, the answer for Anarch tends to sound “not without going triple on your breakers or using all your influence on tutoring+draw”

3 knight + 3 influence for draw does wonders

Yeah, knight seems like a strong bridge for anarchs from the early to late game- d4v1d and parasites might play a similar role of bridging you into your full rig by destroying small ice and breaking big ice.
