Can’t we just stream from the Runner’s perspective? Show the runner’s hand with an over-the-shoulder camera. When the cards are unclear, have someone who is quick with identifying the art at the keyboard to type in the names, so the cards show up in an overlay even if you can only see part of the name in the corner.
Another camera could be angled in the proper position for R&D accesses.
If you only stream from the Runner’s perspective, the commentators and the spectators both are missing out on the complete picture. Sometimes this would lead to exciting plays, but I think more often than not it would lead to “huh, why’d he do that?” only to find out 5 turns later, or not at all. That sort of thing falls a little flat for spectators, I’d think.
I’m not sure that would happen very often at all. I was getting the impression that the suggestion was to have the stream from the runner’s complete perspective, meaning they could see the corp side of the board, but never their hand (which isn’t too different from now, actually). Presumably, you would have ALL of the information the runner has, so if the runner does something that would elicit that reaction it’s because it really doesn’t make sense.
Perhaps even run two different streams: one for each perspective. The commentators could have both up, but only show and comment on one, but then that would require a set of commentators for each side… nevermind.
I actually thought what FFG did was pretty decent. Instead of having a static table cam, they switched between over-the-shoulder cams for each player that usually got a good view of the hand. I don’t think up-close pocket cams are necessary – just being able to clearly see cards even at a distance is fine.
I think I still would want a dedicated camera for the table, but if I have enough room the next time I stream, I might try the over-the-shoulder thing. I tried to do it for SMC Finals but the angle I used didn’t work as well as I would have hoped. At least it was something.
If Netrunner was played like esports, Dan wouldn’t be able to shortcut Joshua B. activation anymore.
I didn’t mind FFGs visuals, it was the commentary that could have done with a couple of dudes who knew what they were banging on about!
Maybe there would be enough time in the round that one didn’t have to ;D
But how great was it once Wooley got in the booth!
It was okay. Not sure why he was freaking out so much about either of the final games. Neither were particularly ‘crazy’ IMO. I’m sure it wasn’t but the enthusiasm seemed disingenuous, with the whispering and whatnot. I just don’t care for commentators in any sphere repeating how ‘crazy’ something is. An example: Hoyland installing a GFI behind Ichi is a perfectly understandable line. I’m sure others can agree, it’s something I do frequently and see others do. Can it be considered bold? Sure, but it’s not some mind-blowing line that should rock a commentator’s coherency.
I know this all came out really hostile but my main point is that commentary in the last two games at Worlds was lacking, even with Wooley.
Wow. Nice.
I think Wooley’s tact was to appeal more to casual players, and to boost excitement. In the grand scheme, nothing is really ‘crazy’ about a card game. Part of a good commentator’s role is to build excitement for the viewer, and that may need to be fabricated or bolstered at times.
I think the whispering was because the commentators are sitting less than 15 feet away, behind the Wizard of Oz’s curtain. Still don’t understand that.
I just can’t imagine someone doing a BETTER job of live Netrunner commentary. I can’t even think of any instances where someone’s done a better job of pre-recorded commentary.
I really enjoy his enthusiasm; it gets me into the match.
I don’t think an esport is something to aspire to. Something like mtg is more realistic. And for that to happen, there would need to be a lot more involvement from FFG, in terms of tournament organization, prize support, and catering to the casual base as well. Not sure that’s going to happen, so I’ll be happy if there is ongoing growth, even if it seems to be stagnating in our area, though that could just be the time of the year.
In terms of videos, I know I’ve stopped watching. I used to watch a lot, and I watched worlds, but I think the quality of play is on average getting lower, which means I don’t enjoy watching it. Teamworkcast has amazing visuals and the like now, so that’s always great, but yeah, generally watching people who make mistakes regularly or take a long time to play their turn has put me off watching netrunner videos for now
I do agree that TC recorded commentary is fantastic. It is the only ANR YouTube content I watch.
@spags fair point about proximity; I don’t remember them whispering the whole time.
As the tournament day winded down there is less background noise drowning out the commentators. Netrunner finals were one of the last things, if not the last thing, to finish, and there were not that many games being played at the time, mostly whispering spectators.
I think they’re missing a long enough extension cable for the plugs. I’ll bring a spare one next year.
On YouTube, click the gear icon, go to “speed”, and hit “2”. It’s the only way I can watch netrunner videos.
Metrople Grid does a great job as well.
