Official Rules Question Thread

Goddamn, that’s some confusing rulings… Someone explain like I’m five.

I think that would skirt around the real issue too much. The fact that it is a big rules confusion isn’t Crick’s fault, it’s the rules’s fault. Remember, these types of questions can happen without Crick (see Bako, or imagine if two Parasites are used on Pop-ups mid-run).

I’d far rather them expose cohesive rules than restrict their design space. These things are things we need to know to know how the game works anyway.

This ruling has me somewhat concerned, and I’m also not sure when the bako pull has to happen for it to work this way.

Archer > Bako > Bako. Runner is encountering the middle Bako (Step 3.1 of a run). Corp uses that Bako’s ability to bounce it. Per the “Destruction of Ice” rule in the FAQ (Bako isn’t actually being destroyed, but I assume this rule applies) “the ice is immediately passed and the run continues after any currently open paid ability windows close.” Before the paid ability window closes, the corp bounces the other Bako. Now the run continues from position #2, so the next ice approached is the ice at position #1, which is Archer.

Much abliged, sir crunchums.

I think 3.1 has to work (you can even do it after they’ve broken the Bako subroutine, heh) because with Crick it happens at 3.2. I tweeted Lukas for clarification regarding whether it also works at 2.1 and 2.3.

What if you rez the bako and use it’s ability during the approach phase? Do you even need 2 bakos to do this?

If it works at 2.1 and 2.3 there’s going to be a whole lot of confusion for even using this type of play, unless the corp has a ‘structure of the run’ diagram and they walk through it for each ice.

This makes me assume it only works at the 3.x phases, otherwise you’d only need 1 bako.

This seems bizarre to me. Ice should be installed on the outside of a server. The only way a runner should be able to interact with an ice more than once in a run, or that’s installed during a run, is either Cell Portal or if it’s specifically swapped with a piece of Ice closer to the server than the runner is now. That way we can avoid all these bizarre if, then clauses that will no doubt cause confusion.

Yes. If the server is Archer > Bako > Enigma and you bounce Bako then the run continues from position #2, so the next ice approached is at position #1, which is Enigma. It’s the same with Crick: with a server of Crick > Enigma if you install Tollbooth, the runner approaches Tollbooth next if you trash Crick and Enigma, but if you only trash Crick then the runner approaches Enigma instead.

You would still need 2 Bakos. The destruction of ice rule says “the ice is immediately passed”, so your next approach is the next position, not the same one.

Sorry to bring back this question but now that the card is officialy out, has someone asked Lukas about Street Peddler and Exile ?

I’ll quote my previous post : My logic is the same as when you use Scavenge to trash a program and then re-install it.

First you pay the cost of the ability, then you resolve its effect.
With Street Peddler, when you pay the cost, you end up having Street + 3 cards in your heap. So…

Thanks in advance,

these rulings don’t always seem the most intuitive, but I think we can boil it down to a few simple rules-of-thumb.

  1. if the ice on a server move or change in any way while an ice is being encountered without destroying or removing that ICE, then then after the encounter the run proceeds as normal from that ice’s new position. In other words, you “slide” with the ICE.

  2. if ICE leaves the board for any reason while being encountered or approached, the run then immediately continues as though the runner had just passed ICE at that position (counting from the inside ), regardless of what new ICE has moved into what new positions.

it’s worth noting that the "surprise you’re encountering that archer again"requires you to either have 2 himitsu bakos or 1 crick and one other ice, all of which must be trashed/brought to hand. so it’s a one time trap that costs you a huge amount of time and credits (say nothing of card order) just to make the runner face one ICE twice in a row (and be able to jack out before the 2nd run-in!). for the amount of effort you need to pull this off it’d honestly be easier most times to just run Levy University and the Twins

I wish i could find the ruling (if I’m remembering correctly and it even exists) but I thought I read that card with a trash cost resolve using the board state before the trash (otherwise B&E breakers wouldn’t be able to count themselves for strength, or indeed have any strength at all). if I’m remembering that correctly then that would indeed put exile/peddler to rest.

Street Peddler definitely does not trigger Exile. Street Peddler’s wording (“Install 1 card hosted on Street Peddler”) makes it clear that the card that you install never enters your heap.

Well yes, but I think what’s actually happening is that Lukas and the players are locked in a game to create the most over-complicated interactions possible.

seems like a terrible ruling that someone will try to make something of at a gnk or a regional, and will promptly get shut down by the confused judge on site who will turn his confusion into rage, into a smack in the back of the head.

I might try to pull it off in a draft. MIGHT!

Cool, that makes sense.

Lukas answer isn’t quite correct then: he says it would force you to encounter Archer. I assume he means approach Archer instead. ( I was thinking that to force an encounter, the shenanigans would have to happen after the jack-out opportunity on approach!)

Yep - I phrased the question poorly (talking about forced encounters instead of approaches). I assume he means approach and he was just repeating my phrasing.

Not Peddler and Exile per se, but Lukas confirms how Street Peddler works in this post:

Click though for full context. The ability of Street Peddler resolves based on the game state at trash. As @Crunchums points out, the card text says to install card on Peddler.

Not immediately. The run continues only once the paid ability window closes. In fact, this is the whole reason the Bako shenanigans work, the corp being able to pull two ice before the run continues.
