Cortez Chip finally playable?

Cortez Chip is actually an Event that reads:

Cost: 1 (click to install)
The Corp loses 2c.

It is a 1 credit swing. I don’t think it will ever be worth a slot. If you factor in the click to draw it like some do, it’s a wash. Good Runner decks strive to get more than 1c value out of their clicks.

Well, if I’m not mistaken, Noise has an additional ability as well that starts online

And you realistically only need Wyldside to start with, the Synapses will come in a turn or three.

And and if synapses are 3, that makes 6 total (wyldside is 3 credits)

No offense, but that’s a really stupid way of looking at it.

What it actually does is stop a rez from happening, if you play it right (not unlike Reina’s ability). Sure, you can’t always make it happen (which is why it doesn’t see more play), but it still has the potential to be utterly devastating.

My understanding is if they miss the IHW with the first PC, you die.

How do you figure? If the first PC doesn’t kill me (which it doesn’t), stuff triggering off of me receiving damage triggers (and draws me a card). I’m now at 3 cards, so the second PC will get me to 0 at worst. The card draw isn’t even a paid ability (like trashing a Tallie would be), and even those still manage to resolve before the corp has a chance to play a second Operation (costing a click).

I don’t think damage is done 1 at a time.

So I think the 2nd PC would kill you because you have 2 IHW in hand and you’re taking 3.

This is confirmed here:

@RukasuFox #Netrunner Q: If I have no cards in grip other than a
single I’ve Had Worse and the Corp plays Scorched Earth, do I lose?

@Nagnazul @Geekmate75 The Runner loses.

The two PCs resolve separately, because they are separate actions :).

I’m aware of that.

The below comment is what I was addressing:

That quote related to discussing the merits of this spoiled card, though:

So the assumption (or rather, statement from the quote that preceded the thing of mine you quoted) kinda was that you have that on the table, and I listed how it made a difference. IHW as such has been out long enough that everyone knows how damage works, by now :stuck_out_tongue:

Clearer?

I understand how dubious it is to analyze cards in a strictly mathematical manner, and am often against it myself. In my opinion, regarding Cortez Chip in particular, I think it’s fair. In games of Netrunner I don’t think you actually get to use it to deny rezzes very often. I don’t typically see Corps going to zero after rezzing ICE.

Maybe not unless you help them. But, as it turns out, you do have some degree of control over a Corp’s credit pool as runner. Haven’t you ever played a Reina deck with Rooks? Or any Siphon/Vamp spam-centric strat? Or just three Lampreys in a deck?

There’s plenty of times where corps go to zero after rezzing, that’s not the problem of Cortez Chip. The problem is knowing which ICE to hit with it for it to make sense. Now, Silhouette would be very good here, only if she could fit that thing into her 40-card deck

Still, it has some interesting uses - like, making sure you don’t get hit by a particular piece, based on the Corp’s credit pool.

Cost is 0, since an event need also a clic to play.
The effect is not “the corp loses 2” btw.

If that HB asset is accurate it’s an absolutely massive boost for ETF glacier - free Eli, who wants to run ETF late in a turn with Ichi and Architect around? And Next Gold is tailor made for Foundry decks that might not run any bioroids, even Eli. If the list is accurate it’s a great pack for HB.

The event would be 0 cost - events take a click to play too - but overall I think moist loafs comparison is useful and accurate.
Whenever Cortez Chip would have stopped the corp from rezzing a piece of ice, that event would too. The event probably wouldn’t be good as econ-wise it’s like infiltration, but for sure it would be better than Cortez Chip as it stands.

Cortez Chip being hardware really shines if you don’t use it on the turn you played it - if you have them in play already, you can use any number of them and still have a full 4-click turn. Because you can sort of “bank” the clicks needed (at a pretty reasonable cost of 1 credit), you also can stack the effect in multiples.

You couldn’t do any of that with an event version, which is why it would be complete wallpaper even at 0 credits - some sort of click multiplication would be pretty much mandatory to use it at all.

I’m with PK, if you think that is what cortez chip does, I wonder if you’ve ever played netrunner. What its effect is, is an increased cost to rez ice for a turn of 2. What it actually does is keeps the corp from rezzing an ice while you continue to medium or lamprey slam them for an entire turn, which might earn you 2-4, or even 7 points.

NB4 ‘edge case’ the cry of the math nazi who is losing.

Which is probably why Running Interference (the closest event analogue, I think) is a very different card!

There’s also Bribery which is probably just a fodder card.

First turn bribery for five when they try to rush an agenda. Won me a game this weekend! (OK, it was a draft game.)
