Just going by intuition here, but this looks more like a Code Gate to me.

Additionally, while counters are being removed, I don’t think this would qualify for this getting the Destroyer subtype, as programs/hardware are being trashed.

With this said, i think this one is quite interesting! Would be an interesting pick for certain metas.

Thanks! And I think you’re right. My reasoning was:

  • A destroyer because it can “pseudo-destroy” multiple cards so it attacks the rig (of course, only if they don’t accrue counters, don’t have too many left, can’t spend them at instant-speed, game so on). However, NSG didn’t make Engram Flush an AP even though it “pseudo-damages”, by attacking the grip.

  • Not a code gate because I was considering a cycle of “meltdown” ice across different subtypes, with incidental counter removal (even if it were only a single counter on a single subroutine). Take the un-trojan-able ability (This ice cannot host cards.): Magnet is a code gate (being the first card with an “abnormal” ability), while Tithonium is a barrier (as the second card, it’s “more normal”). The same is true for the un-shrink-ability of Lotus Field and Self-Adapting Code Wall.

[$2] ICE [2s]: Code Gate - Morph
(weyland 4/5)

This ice can be advanced. It
gets +1 strength for each
advancement counter on it.

This ice can be interfaced with
only by programs with the (exact)
same strength.

↳ End the run.

It’s an “ICE Atman” or “Strength Changeling”.

It seems wrong to have a barrier that Cleaver, one of the more commonly used fracters, can’t break at all, especially given that it has a hard ETR sub. (It can also be advanced to make the Criminal “2[c]: +2 strength” fracters unable to break it.) Generally speaking a hard ETR that can’t be broken by many traditional breaker suites is bad for the game as it can too easily lead to unrunnable servers.

Generally speaking this sort of ICE comes with some way to facetank through it (e.g. being able to click through it, or making the ETR trace-dependent, or changing the subroutine to, e.g., damage or tag). Even dedicated anti-AI ICE normally has some way for a deck using a pure-AI breaker suite to get through, even if they may not like the results.

Yeah, it was to mess with anarch’s fixed-strength breakers and crim’s multi-boost breakers, as you say, but still fall to simple fracters like Corroder or Curupira. (But I trust your judgement more than mine on this.)

I actually did try out an ETR-unless-[click] subroutine (but it had to be a Weyland Bioroid or Haas-Bioroid advanceable ice) and an AP (but it had to be a Weyland net-damager or Jinteki advanceable ice). A tagger (or credit earner?) makes sense though.

i think @callforjudgement is right here, but the idea is really neat! Could easily be a ETR or click for HB. It would also be cool to have advancable ice in HB! Something about a quickly learning Bioroid?

Ice: Barrier - 6[c]

Strength 2

You can advance this ICE. The Runner must pay X[c] as an additional cost to use abilities that would break subroutines on this ICE, where X is the number of hosted advancement counters.

[sub] End the run.
[sub] End the run.

●● Weyland

The idea here was to create advanceable ICE for which the advancements scale to infinity and work against almost everything (but the stats are pretty bad unless you actually advance it) – this is something that advanceable ICE decks would really benefit from in practice. It is possible that this is still too good, although Cleaver breaks it fairly cheaply even advanced (and Boomerang isn’t bad – I think it’s a good thing for balance for this sort of ICE to be more vunerable to Boomerang than to Botulus). Banner doesn’t care about the advancements at all, which seems reasonable (an advanceable ICE deck will probably have other ICE that it can advance out of Banner range).

Ice: Code Gate - 2[c]

Strength 3

You can advance this ICE.

[click], 3 hosted advancement counters: Search R&D for a piece of ICE and add it to HQ.

[sub] Place 1 advancement counter on an installed piece of ICE.

● Weyland

This one’s an attempt at a card that improves advanceable ICE decks by giving their enablers a broader use: often these decks don’t have any meaningful use for their enablers, but this is something that you’re always happy to put more counters on and will help you find more appropriate cards to put counters on.

I’m not sure whether it actually needs to be advanceable manually (it can advance itself with the subroutine even if it doesn’t have the permission to use the basic action) – most likely it wouldn’t make much of a difference except in Built to Last.

(On a side note: does any existing ICE have click abilities for the Corp? It works within the rules, and we’ve already seen non-click abilities like on Himitsu-Bako, but perhaps this is crossing some design line that might be wiser to not cross?)

I can’t see any problem with crossing that line. I think it’s a nice new mechanic to explore and thematically it might be reasonable, that ICE does some work, while it is not run.
At first glance 3 counters seems steep for that ability, when we compare it to Wave. With 2 counters for a tutor, I might consider playing it in a glacier or ToL deck.

I like the spending of advancement counters (rather than just tracking them), but if the “production” and “consumption” of hosted counters are both non-run-based, it becomes un-interactive (like an untrashable/inaccessible upgrade, even if three clicks is a lot).

You could either put the ability under an encounter-trigger (like Mestnichestvo) or make the charge-up subroutine-only.

I really like the click-ability. For example, an ice that accrues hosted credits on each encounter/resolution, but that you must click to withdraw them into your credit pool.

The advanceable breakage-tax (à la Interrupt 0 / Gold Farmer) adds a new axis to advanceable strength (Ice Wall’s) and advanceable subcount (Masvingo’s).
