E. Kim Appreciation Thread

@x3r0h0ur Funny because I was testing yesterday a Sage Quetzal like your Edward. I also used Dyson Fractal Generator with Sage (Sage is a Fracter after all). Overmind, one Mimic as a joker and Quetzal’s E3.
Inf is Sage x1, Test run x2, CS x1, E3 x2.

Small Anarch toolbox (2 Djinn, 2 Parasite, 2 DS, 1 Medium, 1 NA), the console is Deep Red. Playing Infiltration x 2 in this deck (back to basics - helps me to know when running or not since those mistakes cost me quite a lot of games these days).

My econ package is somehow different. I tried different things but an oldschool Kati works quite nicelly after all. Data Folding and Memstrips of course.

Main problem of the deck is it’s slow as hell, you need to draw a lot. Quetzal is better in the begining I guess, then Edward should be better in middle to endgame maybe.

I found the biggest issue was money, but DJ and LF were all at the bottom of the deck, and DC and DF were on top. This happened 2-3 times. I wrote it off since its just a silly thing to play anyway.

I’ve been testing Ed exclusively since O&C hit my FLGS and OCTGN. I’m sold. I’ve always been a rig-building runner at the core, and he’s the one in the new box that wants that that most. I’m also a Shaper at heart so I’ve decided to go with 3 x Clone Chip 2x SMC 1 x Femme and 1 x Zu as my influence. This is a Parasite recursion deck aiming to get into the centrals as much as possible. Thanks to @kenobob for the tip on SMC in Anarch–it’s too good. Another benefit of SMC is the proliferation of Grail decks–that is some painful ice to facecheck.

Ed’s ability is both defensive and offensive. In testing I’ve played against a few kill decks and nothing feels better than trashing a Scorch or a Sea Source. The matchup vs PE is also much much easier–more than any other ID, I feel–most likely because of IHW more than anything else–but getting rid of Neural EMPs and Mushins is fantastic.

Since I started this thread, here’s what I’ve evolved the deck to and what I’ll be taking to Store Champs this weekend.

You have SMC and Clone Chip but no Stimhack. This doesn’t make any sense to me. Stimhack is great without SMC and Clone Chip, but with either it’s bananas. Play Stimhack, cut Dirty Laundry (or liberated account).

Also you know what’s better than killing SEA source or Scorched Earth. MURDERING ROBOT WORKERS. It’s where Eddy’s heart is.

Yeah, I should have a Stimhack.

definitely play 3x Stimhack with SMC/Clone Chip.

personally I’m baffled by how people consider Reina worse than Kim. I’d say Anarch ranking is tenatively Noise/MaxX/Whizz/Reina/Ed. maybe MaxX will push to the top spot, idk. perhaps people consider Reina weakest cause to get the most out of her ability you have to tailor your deck a certain way, and that might be true. the same goes for Noise, but his ability is much stronger. MaxX Whizz and Ed can be built any direction and their ability is still just as relevant. I still am on Team Reina (well, after Team Whizz of course =)

Valencia, the forgotten Anarch?

I knew I forgot one! lol

I think one Stimhack is fine. 3 is too many, I think.

Not at all. 3 is exactly the right number of Stimhacks. Stimhack is a brutally powerful card you want to find it asap. Try it, you won’t go back.

And Quetzal too! :stuck_out_tongue:

I think 2 is the right amount of Stimhack! Right down the middle. But it’s definitely necessary with SMC. That Femme can be a giant surprise, or it perfectly pays for an SMC’s Atfour, on top of it’s surprise factor.

ZU is a rough way to spend 2 influence. I’d rather give up the Femme and and the ZU and spend 3 influence on Atman, or lately I’ve been actually wanting Gordian. The one thing I’ve learned is that it’s imperative to tech against Lotus Field in Anarch, unless you’re Noise or going all in on credit denial. Even then, I’ve recovered from some ridiculously bad starts while playing RP against Noise with Lotus Field. Rambling here.

Anyway, the two reads I have on Kim are go the way of consistent access with SMCs and Clones so you can threaten mid game with Medium and/or Nerve agent. Here his ability is a little worse than Whizzard’s, but as noted before, he has built in flatline defense. And he can disrupt stupid Accelerated Diagnostics decks too.

The other way is credit denial. Eater is a great credit-denial enabler, but Keyhole and Kim seem counterproductive. I want to Medium dig with Kim, so his credit denial builds want to ensure accesses to R&D. Using the Femme/Morning Star/Knight Retrieval Run play may do it. That and a little cutlery.

yep sorry. postin too early in the mornin =(

I’d actually say it’s Noise>Maxx>Whizzard/Kim (depends on the opponent)>Valencia (depends on how you use her ability)>Reina/Quetzal. Well, those are just my thoughts, though.

I can understand that

So has everyone dropped Yog for good? Just the fear of lotus field and that’s enough not to run one of the best breakers?

Kinda seems like it. I never wanted to install Yog when I had it, easier to parasite Enigmas and Quandries. 5 credits is too expensive to deal with a few small code gates, and then have to install something else or get locked out by Lotus Field.

I disagree I think that the amount of money you save with yog makes up for it. I don’t think the answer for lotus field is to splash less efficient breakers but make your breakers more efficient (personal touch)

Yog with personal touch and one data sucker token you can break 31/35 code gates for free! Now I will admit order and chaos makes this more difficult. As they introduced 3 new big code gates, Orion (multi type) checkpoint (can fight trace) and wormhole (curse this card) yet for me I don’t want to give that up!

I’m running strong with 2 Yog in my maxx deck, loving every minute of it too.

I’d say I only don’t rank Kim that low because I’ve not had enough of a chance to play with him. In love with the theme, and enamoured with the on-paper effect. Not enough practical experience.

Reina on the other hand, has proven to me repeatedly that I’d rather be playing Whizzard or Quetzal, so long as I’m not already playing Noise.

I’ve been testing all 3 new anarchs, and in my opinion, Kim is the best of the bunch. I think Valencia is next, and then Maxx, which is probably blasphemy around these parts. Kim’s ability is so disruptive to the corp and that is why I think he’s the best. Worst case, you’re taking out economy operations, but you’re also likely to be taking out Scorched Earth, Biotic Labor, etc. It changes the nature of the game entirely.

Here’s 1 of 2 decklists I’ve been playing, and I’ll talk about it more afterwards. I’ve teched it out to go up against both glacier decks and astrobiotics. So far it wrecks NEH.

Edward Kim: Humanity's Hammer (Order and Chaos)

Event (13)
3x Dirty Laundry (Creation and Control)
1x Forked (Order and Chaos)
3x I've Had Worse (Order and Chaos)
1x Knifed (Order and Chaos)
1x Spooned (Order and Chaos)
3x Sure Gamble (Core Set)
1x Wanton Destruction (Order and Chaos)

Hardware (3)
3x Desperado (Core Set) ••••• ••••

Resource (9)
3x Armitage Codebusting (Core Set)
2x John Masanori (Opening Moves)
2x Same Old Thing (Creation and Control)
2x Security Testing (Honor and Profit) ••••• •

Icebreaker (8)
2x Corroder (Core Set)
2x Knight (Mala Tempora)
2x Mimic (Core Set)
2x Yog.0 (Core Set)

Program (12)
2x D4v1d (The Spaces Between)
2x Datasucker (Core Set)
3x Djinn (Core Set)
1x Imp (What Lies Ahead)
1x Medium (Core Set)
1x Nerve Agent (Cyber Exodus)
2x Parasite (Core Set)

Notes:

I play this deck like an aggressive Criminal as much as I can. Hence, I want the cards that reward repeated runs on central servers: Security Testing, Desperado, and Data Sucker.

Armitage Codebusting helps out with econ, but I’d consider replacing them with Day Job. DJ is awesome, but I like to run every turn if I can. I think AC is better against fast decks like NEH, and DJ is better against glaciers.

John Masanori + Security Testing is great against NEH but terrible against glaciers. One of the things I am still experimenting with is 2 of Masanori vs 2 of Earthrise Hotel. EH costs more, but you never have to worry about tags when your breakers don’t show up. Inject is a great card but it doesn’t work in this deck because I have no Deja Vus or Clone Chips. Likewise, I’d consider dumping Security Testing for another form of econ like Magnum Opus (host it on Djinn) or Kati Jones.

The breakers suite is an either/or proposition. Against glaciers I’m probably running Knights and D4v1d instead of Yog and Mimic. Against fast decks I’m running Yog and Mimic and tossing Knights and D4v1ds.

Memory can be tight if I don’t get my Djinns out first and I’m looking for a reasonable solution. I’m often stuck not being able to Parasite something because I’m maxxed out on memory.

Parasite vs Cutlery is a very interesting decision! I love them both and wish I had the decks pace to max out on both. I like parasite because it can kill stuff before you have the right ice breakers. I like the cutlery because you can absolutely wreck big ice using D4v1d and is a central part of the strategy against glacier decks. And I love knifing Eli for 2 clicks and 2 bucks. 2x Same Old Thing is for use on Cutlery and can be played before you have the right ice breakers instead of having to discard them because you are over your hand limit.

Using the tutoring ability of Djinn is an absolute must! I’ll tutor out Medium or Nerve Agent depending on which I think is easier to get into. I’ll tutor out imp to trash assets or on a big multi access run. I’ll tutor for anything really and Djinn is a work horse in the deck. I could go on at length how anarch players don’t use Djinn’s tutoring ability enough!

1x Wanton Destruction because that card is awesome and takes people by surprise. I could also swap it for another imp and achieve pretty much the same effect (I can trash 3 cards with WD and up to 2 cards with Imp). But I can tutor for the imp. Imp probably wins here, but it stays like this for now because it is shiny and new.

I’m sold on Ed. I think he’s easilly better than Valencia, since he simply cannot be Tech’d against aside from ‘run a no-op deck’, which is nearly impossible. All Corp decks run vital operations, some more than others.

He’s the only runner who can damage the corp by running a hand that doesn’t have Agendas or Vital Assets (ie, Caprice). Hitting a trick of light, a neural emp, a scorch, a biotic or a fast track can be as fatal for the corp plan as if you’d hit an Astroscript.

Likewise I’ve made a ton of use out of his ‘built in medium’ if you hit R&D, take out an operation then hit it again.

He just needs a real rig, not an Eater rig as he wants real accesses. And even though you can replicate his power with Imp and make it slightly stronger, it’s still an extra card install for that. Sort of like how you can replicate Whizzard with scrubbers, but people rarely do so.

Though not spectacular, he certainly hurts your opponent more with operation trashing than Quetzal or Reina does with their abilities. Hell, over the course of a game if you take out two money operations from a corp’s hand, you’ve already cost them more than what Reina would.

Now MaxX… that’s a different question. It’d take a lot to have a stronger ability than her…
