I’ve been winning a bunch of OCTGN games with my new favorite deck
It’s a breakerless Surfer deck! The strategy is to paintbrush outer ice, surf on in, and use Quetzal + e3 to break. This might be the most fun runner I’ve played. It’s best against glacier, not so hot against faster decks, including Fast Advance. Would love to hear from people having fun with it!
I think my favorite thing about this deck is how it messes with caprice timing.
You’d need to rez caprice before the first ice to keep them out. I’m sure it’ll catch some folk offguard and you might even surf on by her.
Why? Surfer is a paid ability, once you start doing them, you can do as many as you like provided you have enough cash.
The problem is that all the combo pieces are installed from hand here, so as soon as I see a runner going for Caprice server with Surfer installed, I’m rezzing her.
Looks like a very original deck, props dude
Now why no Crescentus / Peddler, I wonder. (I see only 4 event I would not cut: StimHack, 1 FAO, both IHW).
Sure, but in a two (or more) ICE server all the corp has to do is not rez the outermost one you tinkered and let you hit the inner one that the runner can’t deal with. With Paintbrush, after you finish the Surfer run the rezzed ICE is now at the inside position so when you want to go again you need to facecheck a fresh ICE and then Paintbrush it again (unless it’s a barrier) before you can surf. This just seems like a really dangerous strategy and will be more click intensive than just having money and breakers / Parasites.
Also, the corp can choose to rez a non-outer piece of ice so you still end up needing to facecheck.
Can I just say how much I bloody love Surfer? It’s simply so…fun, with a novel in-game effect that perfectly fits the theme of the card and of the faction. It just works.
Whoever designed it deserves a large pat on the back - though on second thoughts, perhaps a high five would be more appropriate.
Haven’t seen it in play together yet, and I’m not quite sure how often you’re hitting unrezzed ice on multiple 3+ deep servers, but somehow I connected the Quetzal/Surfer deck with really being able to capitalize on DDOS. I like the Cyber Threat play as well, but this deck feels like it’s going to be busted-ass broke most of the time… although I suppose that fits the surfer theme as well.
My last game was against a Foundry fast advance that had scored Mandatory upgrades (I won! ). At the end of the game, there were 5 rezzed ice on R&D, I had a lot of fun surfing by a couple Merlins, Lancelot, and a couple NEXT ice
That’s a really good idea! I’ll definitely try that out.
Actually, I had way too much money. You would be amazed how much money you save by not installing and using breakers. I was paying 2 creds per ice, then number of subroutines minus 1. Even on that 5-deep server, I was paying 9 creds (7 with multithreader) on average. Gordian wouldn’t have done so well, even if they were all code gates.
You would be correct! New version has an added Deja Vu considering Inject is so good in this deck.
I hadn’t even realized, that’s hilarious.
Paintbrush isn’t like tinkering though in that you choose a single type to paint the ice.
I feel like maybe a Stealth Kit deck solves some of the ‘problems’ people have highlighted here… Paintbrush becomes in faction, as does a whole bunch of program tutoring, letting you find Paintbrush and Surfer (single copy as you’re down to 10 inf). With a refractor and a little stealth support facechecking on the first run each turn becomes no threat at all as the ice just becomes code gate. With a Lady and some recursion of her you can break the one-off barrier you need to break each turn pretty readily
I guess the ice is either: broken for peanuts with refractor; surfed down to the server with surfer; or… I dunno about sentries. You can paint these?
Basically, you’re making it a big pain for the corp to build servers as to stop you pulling shenanigans there needs to be a code gate/sentry on the outside, followed by another sentry. And even then, with enough time, you can paint that ice.
And of course all of that can be stacked on top of a run event. Indexing, Maker’s Eye, Account Siphon; hell, maybe this is the deck for Escher. Whatever you can squeeze in there after you’ve got all the moving parts set up.
EDIT: Plus, even if they do fiddle around and build a server that can keep you out once… You just surf the ice they’ve set up around after using paintbrush! Great, now that code gate/sentry that was on the outside is a barrier, I’ve surfed it in, stolen an agenda, and the blocking sentry got moved up and will become a code gate when I run next turn!
