The Geist Zeitgeist

Still only helps you with 1 of the tags off the BN play, leaving you dead to 24/7 + Double Scorch, doesn’t it? It protects you against Traffic Accident but so does a single clone chip.

Siphon helps with that match-up a bit as well. Also, you can always just steal Breaking News to prevent the 24/7 kill

All things easier to do when you’ve got Desperado paying you cash monies

Desperado has just sort of fallen out of favor for me. I’m not running Dirty Laundry anymore either. But, it’s not serious tournament season so it’s fun to just play around with new things.

I hear ya. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to make any tournaments for a bit so I started to play some PPVP Kate just for funsies. For Jinteki.net SHL games though, I think I’ll only bring Geist. I want to win, after all.

i’ve been trying something similar out of Leela and have come to the same conclusions.

i think Criminal’s derez effects are a lot better at dealing with Foodcoats than normal ICE destruction because they’re higher to rez and have higher strength, so they take longer to die and hurt a lot more if the corp has to rez it again.

i also came to the same conclusion about SecTesting and Bank Job. going -2 SecTesting and +1 Bank Job helped a bit for money surges as well as helped open up deck slots.

haven’t been playing Geist lately, but i think i’ll head back. having weird results with Leela.

I’ve given up with Geist B&E entirely. I’m seeing nothing but Turing, Archangel, Little Engine and Crick right now, with additional fun from Data Raven and Gutenberg. The whole deck just crumbles to that sort of thing - cheap, big code gates.

Maybe it’s because of Assassin? Because that ice is a joke to crim with Crescentus.

Archangel looks like a pain, but everything else has been controllable, in my experience. It’s worth noting that letting archangel fire is optional even if you can not break it, since you can deal with the trace. And it bouncing something is maybe easier for Geist to deal with than anyone, since he can probably fetch a replacement mid run. Only Haley would handle it better short of a torch or cycy.

that’s the exact piece of ICE i was thinking about. break it for 3 with Faerie or free (plus card draw) with Shiv, Clone Chip a Crescentus (more card draw!) and derez it. it’s way more taxing on the corp at that point than it is for Geist. it’s all the Pups and Pop-up Windows that are such a pain to break, which is probably why Anarch has been so good lately

@Dragar i think we’ll see a noticeable dive in Little Engine usage at least after Kala Ghoda (and Street Magic) comes out. i’d also say it’s not too bad for Rex. pay 6, get 5, derez a 5-cost code gate. of course for Crowbar, it’s a bit of an issue if not going all in on cloud, BUT i think cloud will be a bit more viable with some of the cards in Mumbad (looking at you, Sports Hopper)

What’s the install cost on hopper?

so 3 credits for 4 cards with Geist and provides some link until you need the cards. for me, it’s a straight up -2 Plascrete +2 Sports Hopper

also, of note, it’s not coming until the 4th pack, so we’ve got some time before we can really see how it’ll work with Geist

Yeah, it’ll definitely replace plascrete for me too, then. What a solid card for the deck. It would even allow sneakdoor! One thing to note, though, is that unlike plascrete and crash space, this doesn’t happen at prevent speed. Not that that should make too much of a difference, but it saves the Corp using the meat damage card as you have to burn the hopper proactively.

Such a small downside doesn’t affect how awesome it is, though.

@linuxmaier What’s your thinking behind HQI over Legwork? When I tried that it felt really slow.

not @linuxmaier, but i’d much rather see Street Peddler nab HQI instead of Legwork. it can also be a nice surprise, making a run on HQ and popping HQI at the last second, so they don’t shore up their defences like they would if you had made a blatant Legwork run. granted, this only really works once, but it’s nice and stays out on the board for those repeated runs on HQ

maybe with 3x Same Old Thing Legwork might be worth it though, but i like to Siphon as much as i can and use them for those. it’s a big part of really any criminal’s game plan. i also invariably end up needing one for Levy

But unless you land a Siphon or a Bank Job, you’re basically broke, and corps know that. HQ gets expensive quickly. You can also Legwork through an Archangel, whereas you can’t HQI through one. I’ve always felt way too poor to play out HQI.

yeah, Data & Destiny still isn’t out over here, so i guess it’s hard for me to say. this is based on my experience with up to all of SanSan

i’ve also been busy writing a lot for school and haven’t played much in about a month :stuck_out_tongue:

basically, Legwork was the norm, and i started trying out HQI and actually liked having a couple of them even. but yeah, Archangel is kind of a gamechanger

New topic! Let’s talk more about Security Chip.

This has generally been panned in Sunny, for good reason - her breakers are boostable with money, making Security Chip a pure economy card that is easily quantifiable (and it comes out poorly).

In B&E Geist, one of the biggest issues I’ve found is you need a critical mass of breakers out before they’re decent. Security Chip isn’t economy in Geist, it’s speed and utility. This is kinda a big deal (particularly with bigger, cheaper ice appearing more and more), and at the very least it’s harder to evaluate. I’ve been considering Datasucker for the same purpose (combos with Desperado/Sec Testing), but centrals are being locked up so quickly this just isn’t working. Has anyone tried link plus Security Chip as a way to speed up getting breakers up to useful strength?

I think if you’re after speed and utility, Security Chip comes out pretty poorly in Geist too. Until you have +link it’s the same as another breaker, but you can’t use it to break ICE (and you can’t break small ICE with it either). If you need +link and Security Chip then your breaker and whatever is giving you link could be ice breakers… I’m not sure how it fits in decks.

I know link has other utility, but I don’t really see Security Chip at all. I haven’t tried it though. Maybe it’s alright. I think you need rabbit holes and stuff to make it work, and you don’t have influence for that. Plus those cards are still bad, whatever @mendax might try to make you believe.

When Sports Hopper exists, at least you’ll have 1 good link card to put in your deck.

So speaking of Sunny card’s has anyone considered Security Nexus in Geist?

  • Lets you get past any of those big ice the cloudbreaker suite struggles with
  • When you run into something you don’t want to handle you can deliberately lose the trace and take the tag (because you’re Geist and have a bunch of ways to lose tags for profit)
  • Gives you a non-resource link for your cloud breakers
  • Obviously gives up the Desperado/SecTest engine, but still goes pretty well with Bank Job and Siphon. Desperado/SecTest via cloud breaking was having troubles with modern corps anyway.

It might be another Geist idea thats waiting on Tech Trader and Sports Hopper to improve the economy and draw power.
