Going Against the Grain: Reg-Ass Maxx

Just played a game where corp double Lotus’ed HQ. My Zu was a sad puppy.

While I do agree that 4 inf isn’t ideal, I don’t think CyCy and Torch are a fair comparison.

CyCy is just a single server, and Torch cost 9 to install when you just want to break Enigma/Quandary, which are seeing more play now that Lotus has clamped down a bit on Yog.

Yog is much cheaper and acts as multiple Parasites, and I think it’s far more efficient to be able to play it against all decks with the chance to upgrade it via PTouch when you see Lotus.

Zu is certainly better than CyCy or Torch, but paying 4 each time for Lotus isn’t a very good solution.

Edit: 4 for Lotus, not 3.

I don’t think torch is viable as the only solution. 2 zu is almost certainly better; one zu seems fine. But when I played against a torch maxx yesterday, holding him out of HQ with an enigma, as soon as he discarded his torch I put my other enigma on archives (should have done so sooner, tbh), forcing him to pay 9 anyway to femme the enigma to get the torch out, and then he didn’t have enough to kill sansan and had to let me keep it rezzed across two turns. Mind you there are a lot of other lines he could have taken (playing eaters to make retrun better, or giving up on torch), but it seems much better to choose breakers that make retrun a “plan B” card rather than “plan A” (and no, I don’t mean the ambush card that scores agendas).

I’d cut LF before Legwork any day. Toolbox-y decks like this one really want to maximize the number of servers you can present credible threats to, and Legwork has just been (IME) way better than any other HQ threat that you’d play as a singleton–Wanton Destruction and Nerve Agent are both clunkier to draw and much harder to recur.

I think there might be a MaxX deck that starts on the Keyhole-Wanton-Eater bs train and ends at a big rig - but honestly may win before it gets there - using ret run to install the 8-9 cost breakers. I want it to work, there might be too many moving pieces. You can stimhack out the breakers too, ret run isn’t the only option. Sometimes you just play the damn things from hand. MaxX’s draws are a bit weird, so I don’t want to rely on event econ. That means unless you’re running Mopus you can’t easily go tag me. I still think if you’re running Eater you can probably have Vamp as part of your HQ pressure. I wonder if Tri-Maf isn’t worth a look for MaxX, possibly as a secondary econ click after clicking Kati (oh wait, no, that really doesn’t work, MaxX doesn’t play nicely with the Mafia, never mind). Opus is really good.

Legwork is good, I certainly agree with that sentiment.

Fuck, I face-planted Architect. Did you miss the ‘Maximum Punk Rock’ subtitle?

I love Utopia, a metric-SHIT-ton, but… INF is super-tight here.

No doubt. It’s a game winner. It’s usually forgotten about, or you draw it. Either way, it’s a beaut of a hit.

Well, ignore HQ then. Most games are won sniping remotes or deep-digging a wide open R&D. One beautiful thing is they expect Siphon, and try extra hard to defend HQ. Victory for you, then.

A ‘win more’ card in here. I honestly don’t think RAM (or GAFF, or whatever) has the creds for it.

There are lots of ways to play this deck. Think it’s personal preference. Not at Maximum Net Deck level yet, and hopefully it never will be.

Indeed. I am very excited for Net-Ready Eyes.

Regarding Lotus Field:

A lot of the Lotus Fields you will see will be out of Blue Sun, so I think running Knight or Cyber-Cypher to deal with Lotus Field would be silly. My guess is Spooned is your best bet.

I think Zu is fine, and I don’t like the idea of clunking up the deck in order to have a better solution for a card that’s not even that common. It’s not as easy as it once was for runners to build their rigs to handle the entire corp meta gracefully. If Lotus Field is big in your meta or you just don’t like being reliant on Zu to break Lotus Field then play a different deck.

Spooned has certainly been my preference for dealing with Lotus Field out of MaxX. GTFO, good ice. GTFO :).

Regarding deck titles, I call it Metal Blade Records, because that label puts out the sort of music MaxX would pirate.

I’ve just been calling mine Eaters of the Dead, but this is a title worth stealing :).

I always had her pegged as a Fat Wreck Chords type. 2004ish anyway

Really? I’d peg her as more of a Rancid circa '93-4 grrl.

Actually I’ve given it some thought and she’d probably be all over the self release groups. At least that’s what I’d hope.

I’m pretty sure that the young generation of 35 years from now won’t know what Punk stood for, let alone what it sounded like. She might very well be rocking out to some N’Sync, y’know :stuck_out_tongue:

The hairstyle makes this indeed have a large probability.

But punk rock doesn’t get more “Maxximum” than this:

Assuming this thread is still about all Maxx decks, not just the deck in the linked article, I just came 5th in Sheffield Patriot Games Store Champ with the same MaxX Siphon deck that I won with in Nottingham. MaxX was a beast in swiss and won all 5 of my runner games, finishing swiss 9-1 overall. I dropped 2nd and 3rd game in top 8, including my first loss with MaxX against a blue sun glacier which had a huge economy lead on me from the start, eventually losing by a single credit on the final turn.

The winner and runner-up both had MaxX Siphon decks.

How is this build working against Jinteki PE?

I think PE with some meta (or just switching the agenda scheme, like adding chronos protocol) is going to give tons of trouble to Maxx.

I understand, not keen on losing legwork either. But we’re on a fine balance with econ cards, 3 each of gamble, lib acc, daily and kati should be enough most of the time (really not sold on queens gambit), but would like 1-2 more for consistency’s sake. (dirty laundry is pretty good if you can use it for a run you wanted to make anyway).

I like ZU as a solution when you don’t need it, as it doesn’t takes up a card slot (replaces yog). Atman 4 is generally quite useful but takes an extra slot (going to 2 yog then). I think 2x personal touch is awful, as you can’t tutor them and it are 2 extra cards. Torch and retrieval run or Cycy also don’t sound exciting to me.
Deckspace is tight, anything that’s not money or basic breakers needs a good reason to be in.
