I don’t bother double-sleeving for Netrunner, but I have a double-sleeved Legacy deck in KMC Hyper Matte. They make the cards thicker, and a bit ‘rounder’, which interestingly makes shuffling easier even though the deck is larger.
I tried double sleeving for a while, would recommend if you have a list that you only swap 1-2 cards out of, and if swapped played extensively. The main benefit is the extra protection from grit and grime that can fall onto a card from the open end of a regular sleeve, but the extra thickness gives a decidedly different shuffle feel (especially with hypers).
The problem I had with double sleeving is that there are often large air pockets in the bottom of the regular sleeve, and it takes some compression (not good for the sleeves imho) or about a few hours of play/shuffling to get them to ‘normal’. I also swap lists pretty often so its become more of a hassle than it’s worth for my use.
Ok, since I already have a perfect fits at home, i’ll try sleaving just to see how it feels. Depending on the shuffle feel I’ll see where I go from there
I’ve tried every sleeve type except for the new Dragons Shield Mattes.
Ultra-Pro
Ultra-Pro: The only ones I’ve broken sleeves on within the first three months of use, they also lost good shuffle feel quickly and acquired dirt. (This includes the art-backed Ultra-pro sleeves. The corners bent most frequently on art-backed sleeves.
Ultra-Pro Pro Matte: These ones I’ve never broken a sleeve. Occasionally a corner is bent, and I had problems once where two packs had 1mm difference in length, making some cards stand out. I use these now for sleeving Netrunner as they are cost effective.
Dragonshield
Dragonshields: I’ve sleeved a boozecube in these. (Around 300 cards. Most are proxies related to drinking while playing. I might’ve chosen cheap things that I wouldn’t care if drinks were spilled on purpose…) They’re cheap and durable, but shuffling is annoying, and the quality control on the sleeves is the worst I’ve seen for the width. The length is fine, though.
KMC
KMC Super Mat: Fine sleeves, but they lose shuffle quality relatively quickly and start to stick.
KMC Hyper Matte: Best sleeves I’ve ever used. They’re the most expensive, but I use these for any deck I care about that isn’t Netrunner. (Legacy, Modern, Standard, and Draft sets are all in KMC Hyper Matte now.)
KMC Hyper Matte Premium: Yes, these are different. I just got them so I haven’t had a chance to use them yet.
I also tried MAX Guard I think was the name, and they were ok, but they didn’t hold durability for very long.
Oh, and don’t use Starcitygames’ art sleeves. They have been the worst sleeves for durability. (I’m told they’re better now. I don’t trust it.)
At worlds last year I double sleeved both decks with new Ultra Pro’s. It was both the best and worst decision I ever made in a competitive environment.
I think you need to explain this
Con: Managing the cards during tournament play was horrendous. It was difficult to shuffle, they didn’t want to fully stack up, and they kept on sliding and slipping all over the other cards. Definitely was not prepared for the extra time it took to make sure all of my cards were in one place.
Pro: the look on some of my opponent’s faces when I sat down with this setup. Had to spread the cards out since they couldn’t stack well.
It could have been more manageable if I didn’t double the size of my deck and use brand new sleeves, which was the biggest problem. I could probably handle one of those by itself, but definitely not both.
Super-brand-new sleeves definitely are slippery.
I’ve found it takes em about 3 matches before they stop sliding all over the place, for KMC Hypers, anyway. (Dragonshield take longer.)
I eat a bag of sour patch kids during the first game with new sleeves. I also make it a point to lick my fingers a lot and wipe them on my pants before touching my opponents decks.
Also kool-aide stains in the corners of my mouth, pudding stains on my shirt. Bonus advantage, people go easy on you because you look like you’re special.
Man, I really wish I’d have read this thread before I invested in Ultra Pro Matte Sleeves for my entire collection. I got blue for corp, red for runner which I’d stick with, but now I’m wishing I’d have tried the KMC Hyper sleeves first. It sounds like they are great.
I love Legion because I’m a whore for shiny things and I can play with the Serenity logo.
So pretty.
I’ve got Legion as well, because I like the circuit board look, which matches the Netrunner theme well enough for me. I wouldn’t say they shuffle well as the corners seem big and sometimes catch on the edges of the other sleeves. The theme was the primary motivation here.
Corp: Circuit Blue Sleeves
Runner: Circuit Red Sleeves
I’d recommend something else if you’re going for function in your sleeves, but if you’re looking for art (or low cost) Legion’s got a good selection.
I have ultra-pro clears for my collection storing, and for general testing. The cost is a lot lower than doing this for KMCs. When i feel confident with a deck enough to bring it to game night or with friends for at least a few consecutive games that’s when i swap to KMC.
I think double-sleeving ANR cards is the optimal choice rather than single-sleeving, coz ANR cards is a little bit smaller than the regular MTG cards (which is the standard size for any standard sleeves). If you’ll examine it, you can see the card doesn’t snugly fit in right into the sleeve. I’m using KMC Hyper Mat sleeves and their Perfect fit sleeves for this purpose. DS is a little problematic for this method coz they are much tighter than the KMC brand.
I also prefer to double sleeve as I find the cards a bit flimsier than what Im used to.
Having used hyper mats, DS mattes, ffg art sleeves, ultra pro matte and a bit of original DS, I’d recommend DS Matte: no bent corners so far!
Art sleeves are terrible in general. Very bad experiences with Art sleeves in general. Am currently waiting for Dragon Shiled to come out with mattes in more colours before I resleeve all my Netrunner decks in them.
The worst part about art sleeves is the art is always bad
I really like the Deep Red Art. Unfortunately, they’re already fraying and peelig, and I expect them to be unusuable in a couple of months, so I’ve already got a box of Dragon Shields on standby.
Anyone knows where can I order some Dragon Shield Mats shipping to Europe (Netherlands)?
